Kosher Salt Basics – Your Ultimate Guide
There are many types of kosher salt available on the market. The options can seem overwhelming, but here are a few basics that you should know.
In order to distinguish between kosher and non-kosher salts, two things must be identified. First, the regular table salt or kosher salt. Second, kosher salt must be white. This is a very important consideration because most products on the market are not labeled as kosher in the United States.
All kosher salt used for cooking is manufactured from ores mined in the Kedar region of Israel. These salt deposits in the Kedar region are taken out of the ground by hand and slowly lowered into the sea to be heated during processing. This ensures the salt is not contaminated by human hand while it is being prepared.
Kosher salt does have several characteristics that distinguish it from regular table salt. These are:
Plain old table salt contains sodium chloride. It is derived from seawater and does not have any minerals in it. Furthermore, it contains phosphates. Phosphates cause mineral deficiencies in people with kidney problems.
Table salt, when consumed over time, causes osmotic pressure inside the body. This increases the rate at which the water is expelled from the body. Therefore, people who regularly consume table salt are also consuming an amount of water in addition to the salt. This is known as hypernatremia.
Salt becomes more concentrated when it is softened. Soaking and other processes have a salting effect on the salt. During these processes, sodium carbonate (table salt) and magnesium carbonate (table salt) are changed into sodium chloride and magnesium chloride.
Now that you know what all salts are, you need to know about two kinds of kosher salt. The first kind is refined or fleishig salt. The second kind is unrefined kosher salt.
Fleishig salt has been in use since ancient times. However, it was very rare until the 1700s when it was discovered by Nathan Kolomaya, the first rabbi in Israel. Fleishig salt was not considered kosher. When it was discovered that fleishig salt is actually crystallized salt, it was sold under the name of crystallized kosher salt.
Unrefined salt is not marketed as kosher because it has not undergone the same kind of purification processes as the standard kosher salt. The purest form of unrefined salt is simply mineral salt. Mineral salt is mined from the ground and it is processed for a very long time before it can be recognized as salt.
There are many different salts that are available in many different sizes and shapes. You can buy them for your kitchen at your local grocer. Kosher salt comes in several different forms and you can purchase them in different varieties.
Just remember, when you use your kitchen at home to prepare food, always buy salt with the standard ingredient list. Salt is an essential ingredient to any good meal and you should only use it as a seasoning and never as a preservative.
